Each year, after AIGA has showcased the winners of its annual juried competition, the organization has always donated its spare, leftover materials to a non-profit organization. When AIGA asked Methodologie to design this year’s exhibition, the Seattle brand firm flipped the process: It looked for an organization with a need it could fill before starting design. The search led to Publicolor, a program that teaches at-risk kids painting and life skills while transforming drab schools and other public facilities into renewed environments. Publicor’s need resulted in an unorthodox, but wonderfully appealing, use of paint supplies for the showcase: shiny new paint trays are repurposed as frames; tabletops rest on boxes of paper towels, rolls of rosin paper, stacks of empty five-gallon buckets and and stacks of folded six-foot ladders. While it may sound like a work in progress, the artful misuse of painting supplies was a deliberate choice, and the exhibition looked polished and professional. At the close of the exhibition, AIGA donated to Publicor, 7 ladders, 41 buckets, 50 rollers, 30 pans, 720 rolls of paper towels, 168 rolls of red rosin paper, and 5 drop cloths.
