Background: Exhibition is a Paris-based print and digital magazine operating at the intersections of self-expression, boldness and beauty. Fashion and its specific subjects at the convergence of cultures and know-how are the focus of the magazine. Exhibition acts as a printed exhibition space and an art object.

In conceptualizing Exhibition in its online format, we wanted to translate the magazine’s essence without simply creating a digital copy of the original. Our first step was to imagine how we could convey more diverse content and engage a larger audience without compromising on the aspects that had helped grow the magazine’s cult following. With this in mind, we created the website to have a strong mobile and tablet experience, and through this, we were able to share Exhibition’s digital vision to its fullest potential while staying true to the magazine’s identity.

Design core: Within the website, our aim was to re-create the familiar experience of flicking through a print magazine. We focused heavily on the search engine we implemented, creating a system that lets users browse through articles based on both tags and contributors. With access to related articles provided by searching just singular words, users can now carve their own paths through the site and dip in and out of content with ease, enabling a seamless, self-directed, content-based journey—just as a print magazine would.

Process: We worked in collaboration with Exhibition to fully understand its digital goals. The magazine wanted to be able to communicate at a more frequent rate on a broader set of subjects, in contrast to the biannual print magazine. As Exhibition designs its print magazines itself, we were highly constrained to its in-house rules on grid, typography and art direction in general. We worked on a new design based on its wireframes, which was a different process than we would normally do—this had an impact on the global timeline.

Technology: We used Figma to design the website, Nuxt for our front-end framework, anime.js for animations and Prismic as a headless CMS.
