I didn’t really know what I wanted to photograph or what I wanted to say about the country. I spent a lot of time wandering around, talking to people, looking for moments. I was drawn to spaces that were clearly destroyed by the civil war, but where life went on anyway—and if I waited long enough, I might find some beauty or transcendence.”
