Based on the island of Tasmania, Australia, designer Megan Perkins distills the essence of a brand into design work that’s minimal in its approach but maximal in personality. Inspired by contemporary conceptual artists—such as Christo, Olafur Eliasson, Ryoji Ikeda and Angelica Mesiti—and exploring the impact of environment and archetypes on the collective unconscious, she also credits her experience as in-house design lead at the Museum of Old and New Art in Berridale, Australia, for developing her research-based process to express the character of her clients’ brands. “There is real importance in absorbing and understanding the brand until it becomes second nature, of becoming fluent in the brand language, and creating from that place of instinct,” Perkins says. “Once you know [the brand’s essence], you can ensure that all its assets, deliverables and communications pull in the same direction. Even if the gestures are more subtle, they’ll feel on brand.” Beyond her studio, Perkins passionately supports women in design and local designers and craftspeople, helping them break through systemic barriers whenever she can. “I’m the chair of the board of directors for Design Tasmania, one of Australia’s leading nonprofit design organizations, and I volunteer my time to help elevate Tasmanian design and craft in its various forms,” she says. “It is important for me to support my small island by encouraging and prioritizing local collaborators, fabricators and printers in both this role and my own practice.”
