As if designing six hardcover editions of the greatest masterworks of sci-fi and fantasy wasn’t worrying enough, Penguin Art Group had another request for Brooklyn-based designer, illustrator and typographer Alex Trochut as he began work on the Penguin Galaxy series: be strictly typographical. Trochut would have to customize his design decisions not in the context of each book, but across the collectible sci-fi series as a whole—oh, and without relying on illustrations, for which sci-fi and fantasy books are famous. He was up for the challenge. His typography serves as the hero element from which readers can intuit the concept tied to each title—The Once and Future King’s Gothic-like lettering evokes a land of queens and knights, Dune is wrought in golden threads, and the green type for Neuromancer recalls the glitched effect of digital static. The letters of the titles themselves are more than enough to tie the six titles together with an alluring fantasy style, reinterpreting sci-fi heavyweights like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Left Hand of Darkness and Stranger in a Strange Land with a fresh coat of typographic paint.
