For the new South Australia (SA) Water headquarters in Adelaide, Frost Design developed a major signage and environmental graphics scheme as part of the interior fitout and building design. The building is a showcase of sustainability—water, energy and waste have all been targeted to create SA’s first 6-Star Greenstar building—and uses 70 percent less water and produces 60 percent less greenhouse gas emissions compared with typical office buildings.

SA Water wanted to highlight the building’s environmental initiatives, such as the access to abundant natural daylight, expansive external views and recycling areas; Frost’s approach to the design is in keeping with SA Water’s character, and the architectural and interior vision. Imagery by photographer, Giles Revell, celebrates the beauty of water, a cherished resource in the drought stricken state and the company’s 150 years of operation is introduced to the public with large-scale supergraphics applied to glazing with ultraclear vinyl to emphasize the penness between workspaces. Highly visible from the street, the panoramic graphics stretch nearly 40 meters.

Timeline rods forming the backdrop to the foyer reception desk and the signage and graphics have been designed not only to guide users through the space but also to educate and entertain. The use of strong vertical patterning and color in the façade frames the graphic treatment, creating the impression of a superscaled water tank with bubbles suspended in motion on the ground floor. The central stair installation, 25-meter long suspended stainless steel mesh with printed sections of the Murray River, provides inspiration and incentive to take the stairs rather than ride in an elevator.
