As a child in Nebraska, Steve Wolf drew cars every day. Now in Austin, Texas, the grown-up freelance designer and illustrator creates logos, packaging and publications with shapes as streamlined as any Ferrari. Back in high school, Wolf assumed he should become an industrial designer because of his affinity for automobiles. But at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, he discovered graphic design and realized it would better integrate his appreciation for fine arts. “The rest is history,” he says. Today, he muses on other, less mechanical shapes found in disciplines outside design, such as science, music, architecture and nature. “I try to find inspiration in the everyday things that are often overlooked.” Surrounded by posters and antique tins in his home studio, Wolf blends vintage-inspired design with modern elements while staying receptive to new ideas that would evolve his aesthetic. Nearby, his current sketchbooks are still filled with a recurring theme. “I’m obsessed with cars.”
