While developing a fresh identity, New York’s Jewish Museum also redesigned its website with prominent images and graphic style. The site conveys the museum’s revamped attitude and direction, while respecting the subject matter and curating the museum’s dynamic offerings. Designed by Sagmeister & Walsh—with design and development help for the shopping portal from FOUR32C—the new site focuses on users’ ease of navigation and discovery. The result is a multi-level navigation system with key content, such as the blog and events, in modules and carousels integrated into the home and exhibition pages. The flexible template allows for a variety of content to be presented, including text, images and video. The site was developed from scratch in seven months with Expression Engine as the CMS and a new digital asset management system (DAMS). The DAMS has relieved the weight of the core site, with its 3,000 object collection, for acceptable server performance at a reasonable price. The design and digital communities have appreciated the fluidity of the visual language and the elegant navigation, given the depth and breadth of content, while artists appreciate how well their work is shown on the site.
