The first online city guide, ThreeThousand, for Melbourne launched in 2005. TwoThousand (Sydney), FourThousand (Brisbane), SixThousand (Perth) and FiveThousand (Adelaide) soon followed. Collectively, the five guides now reach 160,000 of Australia’s most discerning inner-urban dwellers every month, with more than 37,000 subscribers.

In 2010, it became apparent that the guides needed a new home. This site, The Thousands is the portal to all five guides. Long before anything is labeled “hip” in Australia, this site is updating its readers on the best new venues, galleries, shops, bands, events and adventures to be found in each city. It covers local culture with a focus on the places, projects, products and happenings that don't always blip the radar of the mainstream press. It's an essential online resource for everyone who appreciates that the best things in life are usually the hardest to find.

• The Thousands is supported by Nikon, which has signed on as an exclusive advertiser for a limited time period.

• The arrow logo stems from a communication method employed by medieval armies to signal whereabouts and intentions prior to any actual engagement and correlates to the electronic signals that engage people with the city around them.

• A feat of programming wizardry, the calendar allows readers to roll over each day's events (from parties and gigs to designer garage sales) in their city, complete with weather forecasts to help with planning.

• Version 1.6.2 of a companion iPhone app was launched in May.
